John Hewie to Lyndon Dykes

Not many Charlton Athletic players have appeared in a World Cup Finals Squad but for Scotland’s Lyndon Dykes he joins a group of players to have achieved that feat whilst playing/contracted with the Football Club.

Sweden 1958 saw 2 Charlton Athletic players called up by their respective countries in that Summer’s World Cup. 21-year-old Defender, Trevor Edwards was selected to represent Wales but was an unused squad player in that tournament. However, a South African born 29-year-old defender would go to play a part for Scotland.

John Hewie qualified to play for Scotland through his Scottish parents and was selected for their first group game v Yugoslavia on a Sunday evening which ended in a 1-1 draw. 3 days later Hewie was omitted from the starting eleven when Scotland would lose by 3 goals to 2 Paraguay, but would be recalled for their final group game v France in Orebro.

The French after losing to Yugoslavia in the 2nd Group game was not guaranteed of qualification to the Quarter Finals and for Scotland anything less than a win would more than likely see them exit the tournament.

Scotland got off to the worst possible start when Real Madrid’s Raymond Kopa put the French a goal up after 22 minutes but Scotland had a chance to level the tie when they were allowed a Penalty, 8 minutes later.

Hewie was given the responsibility from 12 yards, but hit the post with a powerful effort which rebounded back over the 18-yard line and the French would go in at Halftime 2 goals up when Reims’s Just Fontaine scored his 6th goal in 3 group games after 45 minutes.

Glasgow Rangers’ Sam Baird would pull a goal back for Scotland after 58 minutes but the score finished 2-1 to France and Scotland and Hewie would be departing the Tournament finishing bottom of Pool 2.

Hewie would go to play for Scotland on 5 more occasions with his final cap being awarded 2 years later in 1960. 19 Caps and 2 goals all whilst as Charlton Athletic player.

For Dykes his and Scotland’s tournament beings with a group game v Haiti in Boston on Saturday evening (Eastern Time) and then games to follow against Morocco and Brazil.
