17 clean sheets and counting from 36 League games this season for Charlton Athletic and a huge improvement on the 5 from the whole of last season. Just 31 league goals conceded so far.
The club record is 20 (Regular League Games only) and that has been reached on 3 different occasions. It’s no surprise then to learn that Charlton Athletic gained promotion from those seasons. 1980/1981 under Mike Bailey when Charlton finished 3rd in the Third Division with 44 goals conceded from 46 games and Derek Hales top league goal scorer with 17.
The 1997/1998 regular season under Alan Curbishley ended with 7 clean sheets in a row and 49 goals conceded from 46 games. Clive Mendonca top league goal scorer with 23, which we all know led to Promotion to the Premier League via the Play Offs
Finally the record breaking 2011/2012 season with 101 points on the board under Chris Powell. Champions of League One, 36 goals conceded in 46 games and Bradley Wright-Phillips top league goal scorer with 22 league goals.
The next best tally is 18. The 2018/2019 season under Lee Bowyer which also led to another promotion for Charlton via the play offs to the Championship. 40 goals conceded from 46 games and Lyle Taylor top league goal scorer with 21 goals.
So to the other 6 promotions in the clubs history.
1928/1929 – Manager – Alex MacFarlane – Champions Third Division South. 11 Clean sheets from 42 games. 60 goals conceded. Top League Goal Scorer – Fred Whitlow – 22
1934/1935 – Manager – Jimmy Seed – Champions Third Division South. 11 Clean sheets from 42 games. 52 goals conceded. Top League Goal Scorer – Ralph Allen – 32
1935/1936 – Manager – Jimmy Seed – Runners Up Second Division. 10 Clean sheets from 42 games. 58 goals conceded. Top League Goal Scorer – Harold Hobbis – 23
1974/1975 – Manager – Andy Nelson – 3rd Place – Third Division. 9 Clean sheets from 46 games. 61 goals conceded. Top League Goal Scorer – Derek Hales – 20
1985/1986 – Manager – Lennie Lawrence – Runners Up – Second Division. 15 Clean sheets from 42 games. 45 goals conceded. Top League Goal Scorer – John Pearson – 14
1999/2000 – Manager – Alan Curbishley – Champions First Division. 16 Clean sheets from 46 games. 45 goals conceded. Top League Goal Scorer – Andy Hunt – 24
As from above there is no hard and fast rules how you gain promotion, but with 10 League games to go Charlton need to show that defensive toughness that has gained them vital points so far as they now sit inside the play off spots. A new club record could well be on the cards. Sit back and watch it unfold.
